Experiences Breed Character

I’m so happy Michael Vick is out and signed to the Eagles and can’t wait to see him tear up opposing defenses again. I just got around to watching the 60 Minutes interview that aired on Sunday 8/16 and was very intrigued on what he had to say.

Now when this dude got fingered as the man bankrolling this tremendous interstate dogfighting operation by the name of Bad Newz Kennels I was in shock that this dude could have this much money & fame and still do something this stupid. I just could not believe it.
So it was proven to be him, the trial went through, all his flunkies turned state on him & he got sentenced to 2yrs. He lost his $130 million contract, endorsements, job, houses, cars and life for 2yrs.
Now granted he committed a crime and deserved what he got but I cant help but feel homie got shafted. So he gets out and then again the NFL shafts him as if he didn't do his time. Commissioner Goodell flip flopping on whether this man can resume his life doing obviously the only thing he knows. Finally last week it was said this highlight film will be back in the NFL. Happiness all around the country not cuz he slithered his way back but because it would be thoroughly unjust to keep him out.
Now he gets to tell his story and he seems very remorseful and saddened by what took place & I accept his apology. But some things stood out for me:

  • First off I cant help, & never could help since this story broke, feel that this is a big deal because he is Michael Vick. Now a black man the face of the NFL most people couldn't stand that. The purists who love the game couldn't help be upset that he did everything different and better than those before him. Now I'm not saying whitey is out to ruin him but ask yourself if it was Peyton Manning or Tom Brady would this investigation go as far as it did. To believe that he bankrolled an entire operation alone with no help from anyone is preposterous. To believe that if he wasn't around this interstate operation of pastime of many would disappear. C'mon.
  • A great question asked was why he did it. The obvious answer was that he was exposed to this lifestyle from very young. How young... 8yrs old. Now is that worth some consideration. In the south this is like a national past time fighting dogs. Don't get me wrong it doesn't make it right but your experiences tend to shape your life. Vick spoke on how cops would see these fights and keep it moving. If no one from you friends/family to the law enforcement tells you something is wrong how would you know?
  • Now my main point I want to hit is why in America is dogfighting looked at so wrong? Is it really for the treatment of the animals or is it because its not mainstream lucrative. People fight dogs for the excitement, blood lust & monetary gain associated with this "sport". Like Vick says in the video for the competition. Reminds me of some very popular sports such as MMA(Mixed Martial Arts), Horse Racing, Boxing. Now these past times are treated differently. Well Boxing & MMA are human sports so there is a sense of control because humans can elaborate when the pain is too much. But lets talk about horses. Those are wonderful creatures right? Now Vick killed dogs who couldn't fight but its the same as when the horses cant run they kill them as well or shoot them up with enough pain killers and steroids that they cant tell they're hurt. Check this link Truth Behind The Horse Racing Industry.

Now again in no way am I condoning what Vick did or asking for him to get special treatment like other athletes but maybe we should ask all the questions before we jump on a man and kill his life.
An animal is still an animal & has animal instincts, so remember before you judge a man remember if your dog is sweet because it is or you trained it that way. When push comes to shove the claws come out & the jaw is strong whether or not someone is there to push the buttons.
